Passenger ships in operation today are subject to a vast array of regulations and standards – such as IMO/SOLAS, SRtP, Polar Code and Class regulations – covering every aspect of ship construction and operation. Essential system redundancy, safe areas and fire safety measures distinguishes HVAC technology for cruise ships from HVAC technology for other vessels.
Passenger ships having a length of 120m or more – or having 3 or more Main Vertical Zones – are subject to Safe Return to Port regulations. The systems required to be available to support habitability – such as air conditioning and ventilation – must be arranged to be simultaneously available in the assigned Main Fires Zones (MFZ) should an incident occur in any other compartment. For the HVAC system, this requires a different design approach. For example, instead of one central chiller, we will design a system with two smaller chillers, so one can always keep running.
